Surah Shams (Arabic: الشمس, "The Sun") is the 91st surah of the Qur'an, with 15 ayat or refrains. It opens with a progression of serious pledges sworn on different galactic peculiarities, the first, "by the sun", gives the sura its name, then on the human spirit itself. It then depicts the destiny of Thamud, a previously prosperous yet presently terminated Middle Easterner clan. The prophet Saleh encouraged them to revere God alone, and directed them in God's name to save a specific she-camel; they rebelled and kept on dismissing his message; they killed the she-camel and God obliterated them all with the exception of the people who had followed Salih.
